PAL13: 1860c Albumen British House of Parliament with the Paddle Steamship Venus On The Thames (industrial/technical interest) – Superb albumen of Parliament with an early steamer standing prominently in the foreground. The composition is really nice as is the contrast between the fore and backgrounds. The piece measures 9.5 x 7.25 inches and is mounted on its vintage paper. Info on the PADDLE WHEELER SHIP VENUS: Builders: James & George Thomson, Govan (1852 – Clyde, Glasgow). Owners: 1852 Glasgow, Largs and Millport Union Steam Boat Co; 1864 Duncan McKellar; 1869 James Gillies. Broken up 1873 (this shot can obviously not be later than this date but given Venus’ fine fettle, I would say it was taken circa 1858-65). I have included a scan of a painting made in 1852 of the Venus By Richard Ball Spencer 1812-1897 (this painting is not part of the lot). There are no tears or any other major problems, just a little toning to the peripheries of the print.
