Product Description

PSP25: 1855c Museum Quality, Extremely Rare and Attractive Large Tinted / Painted Salt Print of Father (ID’d as Mr Able) and his Son in a Kilt by Jabez Mayall – Superbly posed and tinted portrait of a farther and son dressed in his Highland finery. Very few if any salt prints by Mayall have ever surfaced and certainly none of this calibre and presentation. The salt print photograph was taken by Mayall (stamped into the paint on the lower right corner) and then painted over (Most likely by Andre Mansion who was known to work with Mayall and others) in oil. Most of the known salt prints of this period were tinted using water based paints – the use of oil here to mimic a real master portrait is highly attractive and unusual, setting this large piece apart.
