PD56: 1847 Possible Portrait of John Frederick Goddard (Richard Beard’s Main Operator) Daguerreotype by Jabez Mayall of the American Daguerreotype Institution 9th Plt. – Strongly attributed to, and one of only a couple known images of Goddard sees him wearing a polka dot cravat. This is one of Mayall’s earliest dags made in the UK following his return from America in June 1846. He initially worked for Claudet before setting up his own studio. He called this first studio the American Daguerreotype Institution and went by the name of Professor Highschool. Was Goddard friends with Mayall or was he just scouting out the competition to see what all the hub-bub was about with American influenced daguerreotypes which h were supposed to be superior to their UK cousins? I have included a known image of Goddard taken in the early 1840’s for comparison purposes (it is not included in the sale).
