PD195: 1844c Ancient Revolutionary Man Daguerreotype Holding A Cane Bathed In Superb Rembrandt Lighting With Honeycomb Mat and E. White Maker NY Finest Quality Plate in a Plumbe Case:
A commanding portrait of a figure lost in time but one who no doubt witnessed the beginnings of the United States. He confidently grasps his walking stick as he stares into the camera lens for posterity. Who was he? He must have seen action during the Revolution given his 90+ years of age giving a birth year no later than 1854. The early plate is heavy, has 4 sharp corners and has the rare ‘E. White Maker NY Finest Quality’ hallmark. These plates were considered one of the finest of the era but to my experience do not last the annals of time well (looked great when made but degraded worse than its peers) but this plate is the exception by holding up remarkably well. Excellent condition bar a few small spots and a spider. Archivally resealed.
