Product Description
PD132: 1843/4c Philadelphia Cornelius-esk Style Man American Daguerreotype:
From a Philadelphia estate. The handsome gent dons the famous Philadelphia style of clothing for the early 1840’s (tight neck & large silk tie). Philadelphia studios also often used the light green silk pad and an unusually wide oval brass mat. The style & plate characteristics are also reminiscent of Cornelius given the slightly turned pose with arm on table, the luminosity of the background and the distance between subject & camera and the angles. Very similar in composition & chemistry to plate 26 in the book Robert Cornelius By the National Portrait Gallery (page 97). Rare 40 M hallmark, re-silvered back, 4 narrowly clipped corners, flat edges, lacquered glossy surface.
